Q: So when did you start your PR career?

A: Not until my youngest was 14 and my older two were in college. Vince and I divorced in 1985, and I remarried and moved to L.A., where I pursued a career in the entertainment business that I'd always wanted. By that time, I'd chaired every gala that came along — from the arts to March of Dimes to the Heart Association. I called the late Jay Bernstein , a graduate of Casady School who had launched the careers of several stars, and asked if I could come in and pick his brain. Then, I called him every two weeks for six months. Finally, one Friday he said I could start the following Monday, but I'd make only $18,000 a year, getting coffee and working for younger people.

Before we hung up, he asked me, “Oh by the way, do you know how to work a Mac ( Macintosh computer )?” I lied and said yes, bought and read a book over the weekend and, by the end of my first week, knew how to work a Mac. I worked four years for Bernstein and then another eight years for his publicist (Bender/Helper Impact). I worked my way up from assistant to junior publicist to account executive (AE) to senior AE to director of the TV division, which involved promoting things like future episodes of shows and who was guest starring on them. I knew I'd made it, when I was able to move to Malibu and live on the beach.

Magazine four years ago, just 16% of the top 50 firms had what are known as re-entry programs; by this year, that figure had risen to 80%.

The re-entry trend provides a second chance for both firms and lawyers, said Ms. Henry, who is also a lawyer and founder of Flex-Time Lawyers, a nationwide consultancy whose largest practice is in New York. “This is a lost talent stream.”

Re-entrants must be realistic, however. Though they have become more welcome, most are unlikely to regain the pay and potential they relinquished. What’s more, the tough economy means those returning to the workplace must be open to nontraditional arrangements.
