BGH appeal aims to buy imaging gear

Brockville General Hospital (BGH) could become the second community hospital in Ontario to use electronic imaging for patient diagnoses if a new fundraising effort is successful.

BGH stands to benefit from the annual 2011 appeal launched by the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation to raise $135,000 for laboratory equipment.

"It is the way of the future," Dr. Naguib Yassa, chief of pathology at BGH, told The Recorder and Times Monday.

Yassa said lab services connect with every patient in the hospital and the equipment will provide faster diagnosis to improve care for the people of Leeds and Grenville.

Typically, slides are used for a variety of samples that are tested in the lab and consultation is a slow process which normally takes about one week to allow for samples to be mailed to facilities in Kingston or Toronto.

With the new equipment, the sample on a slide – in most cases containing the tissue of cancer patients – may be viewed immediately off the site for a consultation.
