An ode to Jagjit Singh: Vivek Law
Like millions of Indians in the 80s, I too grew up listening to Jagjit Singh. And became an ardent fan. Those were days of a casette player and All India Radio. Every new album of his was a must addition to my small music library. It was only in 1996, when I first got to see Jagjit Singh. I was on an official visit to Nairobi to cover a Made In India week.
Never mind the trade and Government related talks and speeches, the big draw for me was to listen to a live performance by him. He was a natural entertainer. In minutes, a packed hall of largely rich Indian traders settled in Nairobi were on their feet. So much so, that they asked him stay back another day and perform again.
On my part, I managed to walk up and shake hands with him. A year later, I moved to Mumbai. And one evening, discovered he was going to be performing at IIT Mumbai, at their annual fest. I grabbed an autorickshaw and made way to Powai. He was late.
UNHCR | Refworld | CPJ condemns break-in at Nairobi Law Monthly
Early this morning, stealing computers containing critical information for the magazine's October issue, Editor Dennis Ben Musota told CPJ. The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on authorities to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation.
In what appears to have been a well-planned operation, the thieves cut through a metal fence, used a ladder to break into the magazine's offices situated one floor above ground level, and then turned all the closed-circuit cameras upward to hide their activities, according to local reports. The assailants attacked two security guards with machetes and tied them up, Musota said, leaving the two with injuries that required treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital. The attackers stole two computers and two external hard drives with information for a special, 200-page anniversary edition, Musota added. The edition was expected to include a piece on alleged corruption in the administration of President Mwai Kibaki, the publication's lawyer, Paul Muite, told CPJ....
Human trafficking on the rise amid Horn of Africa's drought and famine
Amina Shakir (not her real name) fled the drought and famine in Somalia for a better life in Kenya. But she did so illegally, placing her faith in the hands of a criminal network headed by Mukhalis, or agents in Swahili. In the end her faith was misplaced as she was “sold” into employment upon finally reaching Kenya.
But Shakir is not the only one illegally crossing the border into Kenya. Natural disasters, armed conflict and famine devastating the Horn of Africa have caused an increase in human smuggling and trafficking in the region.
Shakir’s journey took her from a collection point in Somalia to a transaction point in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. She and several other girls made the over 1,000-kilometre journey in a truck under the guard of five men. “I was not alone,” Shakir said. “Other girls were in the truck as well, one man was also there. Our handlers assured us of our safety till we get to our destination … I felt I was in safe hands.”
