Is it against the law for a member of a website/web forum to copy and paste a news or magazine article?

I guess I'm thinking more about copy right issues. I frequent several websites, and have never heard of this being an issue. I don't see this being done for profit, but rather just during a discussion. Just wanted to see what the experts had to say.

if articles are put into the public forum you can almost always use them, you must however reference the source from which you found it, and if any quotes are used, reference those too, other wise its plagiarism!

Office of French Satirical Magazine Destroyed After Release of Special Issue ...

The office of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has been attacked and destroyed by Molotov cocktails on Tuesday night, November 1st, the eve of the launch of the weekly issue.

The cover of the magazine was entitled “Charia Hebdo” and has been circulating since Monday on social networking websites provoking many angry comments. It shows a laughing Prophet Mohammed as Editor-in-Chief with the slogan “100 lashes, if you do not die of laughter!”

The issue was released in reaction to the victory of Ennahda in the Tunisian elections and Mustafa Abd Al Jalil’s statement that sharia law will be the main source of law in Libya.

The fire was contained and there were no casualties, but “everything with which me made the issue was burned”, said Stephane Charbonnier, Editor-in-Chief of the magazine, according to a statement given to AFP.

Law Firm Partner's Self-Serve Checkout Exemplifies Shadow Work ...

A law firm partner going through a self-service checkout isn’t exactly an unusual sight. But it does offer a lesson in how technology has created a “shadow work” economy.

In an opinion column for the New York Times , Harvard Magazine deputy editor Craig Lambert says he saw the partner scanning purchases the other night. The lawyer likely makes at least $300,000 a year, “yet she was performing the unskilled, entry-level jobs of supermarket checker and bagger free of charge,” Lambert writes.

A 1981 book defined shadow work as unpaid work—including housework—done in a wage-based economy. Lambert believes the advent of technology is increasing the shadow work burden and displacing workers. He offers these examples: Self-service kiosks at airports replace ticket agents. Computer travel websites replace travel agents. Computers allow professionals to do their own typing, making support staff “an antiquarian concept....

Muslim Radicals in France firebomb offices of national magazine ...

For some sites, the topic is completely non-topical. For example, Cato is pretty much a domestic policy shop. Their target audience is Congress and people who influence Congress, and most of their focus is budgetary and economic. Islamists firebombing magazines in Paris does not, as you like to put it, "fit their template."
