Comic magazines are a new genre in the world of art and journalism in today's Egypt. However, the history of cartoons in Egypt dates back to the early twentieth century, and Egypt was famous for its pioneering cartoonists such as Rakha, Salah Gahin, Hassam Hakem and Hegazi.
Caricature as an art genre has always been very popular in Egypt, and political cartoons even helped topple several governments in the 1930s and 40s. Sabah Al-Khier (Good Morning) and Rose Al-Youssef magazines have along generated brilliant Egyptian caricaturists.
In the 1990s came Caricature magazine, a unique attempt to bring to the newsstands a specialised monthly publication, but it failed to survive for more than a couple of years because of financial and administrative problems.
The new comic magazines that began appearing just a few months after the 25 January Revolution followed on the heels of comic books that made their appearance in the last few years, such as such as Metro by Magdi El-Shafie (2007) and a translation of Kafka's The Trial (2009) published by Al Shorouk, which were early motivators of the yet promising artistic phenomenon.

Must-Read Excerpt From Robert Levine's 'Free Ride: How Digital ...
Piracy isn't just draining record-label revenue-it's threatening the economic viability of creating content. In his new book, "Free Ride: How Digital Parasites Are Destroying the Culture Business, and How the Culture Business Can Fight Back" (Doubleday), former Billboard executive editor Robert Levine provides a rejoinder to the Silicon Valley cliché that "information wants to be free." As he points out, "The information that wants to be free is almost always the information that belongs to someone else." In "Free Ride," Levine outlines how boardroom and courtroom battles have shaped the dysfunctional online media business. He chronicles the passage of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, examines the rise of Napster and YouTube and reports on Google's role in funding advocacy groups that lobby against intellectual property protections. He also takes a look at how the same problems decimating the recording industry are also hurting newspapers, TV networks, book publishers and movie studios. In an excerpt from his concluding chapter, Levine breaks down the challenges facing the culture business-and suggests survival tactics:
