Auto insurance fees examined for faults

By Pat Shellenbarger/Bridge Magazine contributor
Megan Hanges-Reynolds concedes that until recently she gave little thought — none, really — to Michigan’s no-fault auto insurance law and its guarantee of unlimited, lifetime coverage for those severely injured in auto accidents.
She thinks about it a lot now.
That’s because the morning of Sept. 18, 2010, on her way to a University of Michigan football game, her life changed forever. On rain-slicked pavement, the driver of her SUV lost control. The vehicle rolled several times, and Hanges-Reynolds was thrown out and against a tree.
Of the six occupants, she was the most seriously injured. She suffered multiple rib fractures, three broken vertebrae, a broken shoulder and clavicle, and a skull fracture. She is paralyzed below the waist, likely never will walk again and always will need some level of care. She had to relearn to talk, eat, even think. More than a year later, she is undergoing multiple kinds of therapy five days a week. The cost — so far — exceeds $1 million, she said, all of it covered by her auto insurance.

Executive compensation continues to be an American issue for a second straight year. Only for North America, a majority of both investor (60 percent) and issuer respondents (61 percent) cite the perennial issue of executive compensation as one of the top three governance topics for the coming year, similar to last year’s survey results.
On a global basis, investor respondents focused on board independence. Across every region, board independence was identified among the three most important governance topics by approximately 40 percent of investor respondents.
Issuers focus on risk oversight in North America and Europe. For issuers, the second most commonly cited topic in North America was risk oversight. In Europe, risk oversight was commonly cited along with board competence.
Engagement between issuers and investors remains strong....
Mortgage Fraud Reaches Record Levels - Law Magazine
One of the reasons for the housing crisis in the United States was mortgage fraud. Homeowners, financial institutions, mortgage brokers, appraisers and real estate brokers were all involved in various aspects of mortgage fraud during the housing boom years in the United States. In the year 2010 the number of cases involving mortgage fraud reached their highest level. It was reported that more than 70,000 cases of mortgage fraud were identified in 2010. This is more than twice the number of cases involving mortgage fraud reported in 2006, the year that the real estate market reached it’s height. To put this level of mortgage fraud in perspective, let’s look back to the year 2000. The level of mortgage fraud in 2010 was 22 times greater than the level of mortgage fraud in the year 2000!
There are many pending lawsuits against mortgage companies, banks and other financial institutions that claim that the important mortgage documents were either misplaced or forged. Some of these lawsuits have been successful due to the testimony of the bank employees involved in the actual mortgage fraud process. An example of this litigation involved Bank of America. One of it’s employees in New Jersey testified in 2009 that the company regularly held on to mortgage notes even after the loans were sold to investors. A bank or financial institution cannot prove they are entitled to foreclose on a home if they do not produce the mortgage note. More and more homeowners are using the defense that the bank does not have standing to litigate because they do not have the mortgage note assigned to them.
