Holly Hill approves farmers market project

HOLLY HILL -- The city and Manny Bornia became partners Tuesday night in a public project that's generating high hopes -- along with some questions about the way it's been approved.

Bornia, along with his business partners Josh Wagner and Ramara Garrett, won unanimous approval of their "2nd Street Public Market" proposal over the objections of a few vocal Holly Hill residents --  two of whom were asked to leave the contentious meeting after they tried to speak out of turn.

As a result of the evening's vote, the Bornia-Wagner-Garrett trio's Vanguard Omni Media Group will run an every-Friday-evening farmers market at "The Market," the coquina building still undergoing extensive taxpayer-funded renovations at 101 Riverside Drive.

"I just want to say that this is one of those little double-edged swords," said Commissioner Liz Towsley-Patton, who voted in favor of the agreement despite some misgivings about the timing of it. "I do have to agree with a lot of these people, that this is sort of putting the cart before the horse. It does give the appearance of, everything is all hunky-dory, someone's in bed with someone.

Dear Friends,

Harry Truman once said that a “statesman is a politician who’s been dead for 15 years.” In other words, our view of the nobility and wisdom of our political leaders grows the further we get from their public service. Remember that the next time you see a bumper sticker with a photo of George W. Bush, bearing the legend, “Miss him yet?”

If we want a virtuous and just society, we cannot afford to concede that statesmanship is a lost art. As King’s College professor David C. Innes notes, politics “politics is more than just good intentions. It requires knowledge, judgment and an ability to move people so that they want to follow you. Essentially it requires statesmanship. Statesmanship is the just, prudent and persuasive exercise of authority.”

As statesmanship declines, public life becomes more tawdry. The personal corruption of political leaders deepens our cynicism, and the unwillingness of many officials to make tough but necessary policy choices seems more animated by their chances for re-election than the best interests of the country....

Law Firm Partner's Self-Serve Checkout Exemplifies ... - ABA Journal

A law firm partner going through a self-service checkout isn’t exactly an unusual sight. But it does offer a lesson in how technology has created a “shadow work” economy.

In an opinion column for the New York Times , Harvard Magazine deputy editor Craig Lambert says he saw the partner scanning purchases the other night. The lawyer likely makes at least $300,000 a year, “yet she was performing the unskilled, entry-level jobs of supermarket checker and bagger free of charge,” Lambert writes.

A 1981 book defined shadow work as unpaid work—including housework—done in a wage-based economy. Lambert believes the advent of technology is increasing the shadow work burden and displacing workers. He offers these examples: Self-service kiosks at airports replace ticket agents. Computer travel websites replace travel agents. Computers allow professionals to do their own typing, making support staff “an antiquarian concept.”
