Tea Party vs. Occupy Wall Street
David Gregory , host of NBC 's Meet the Press , recently complained about Occupy Wall Street protesters "demonizing" banks and wondered, "Is this not a reverse Tea Party tactic?"
Gregory is right. In many respects Occupy Wall Street ( OWS ) is indeed a mirror image of the Tea Party. To the Tea Party, government is the enemy. To OWS, the huge corporation is the enemy. OWS wants to raise taxes on billionaires. The Tea Party wants to considerably reduce them. OWS wants to rebuild and strengthen the safety net. The Tea Party wants to weaken it.
Both OWS and the Tea Party are mass movements, but their attitude toward the masses couldn't be more different. OWS and the other Occupy protests lack leaders and a formal platform, but their demands clearly emerge from the thousands of individual grievances expressed in homemade signs and letters.
Chicago Alderman Says Cash ... - Cannabis Culture Magazine
Some officials in cash-strapped Chicago believe they've found a way to bring in millions of desperately needed dollars while freeing up police: marijuana.
Alderman Danny Solis plans to introduce an ordinance Wednesday that would make possession of small amounts of marijuana a ticketable offense with a $200 fine rather than a misdemeanor. He estimates the change would generate $7 million a year and, since the vast majority of such cases are dismissed, would save police and courthouse workers money and thousands of hours of time.
Similar laws exist around the country, but unlike in other states and cities where debate has often focused on marijuana use, the discussions in Chicago are centered almost entirely on money and wasted resources.
"In these trying times of the economy, we could really use the revenue generated by fines versus Arrests," Solis said. "And each (arrest) means police officers are spending an inordinate amount of time outside the neighborhoods, inside the district offices doing paperwork....

Chicago Alderman Richard Mell, left, speaks during a news conference Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, in Chicago, accompanied by several aldermen who support an ordinance that would turn possession of a small amount of marijuana from a misdemeanor into an infraction that is no more serious than a traffic citation. Alderman Danny Solis says his ordinance that would require people caught with 10 grams or less of marijuana to pay a $200 fine would mean about $7 million a year in revenue for the city. (AP Photo/M. CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago alderman says he's found a way for the city to raise desperately needed cash that will also keep more police officers on the street: Marijuana.
Alderman Danny Solis introduced an ordinance to the City Council on Wednesday that would make possession of small amounts of marijuana a ticketable offense with a $200 fine rather than a misdemeanor that carries jail time. He estimates the change would generate $7 million a year and, since the vast majority of such cases are dismissed, would save police and courthouse workers money and time.
