Playing katch-up with the Kardashians

Just yesterday morning I was talking to my sister about the persistence of the Kardashians: Neither of us understood anything about them except having ambiently heard them spoken of or noticed headlines with their names in them, and yet there they were in our minds, nagging us to understand what they were all about.

I had the idea they were sisters whose names all began with K, and that they had some kind of reality show on a network that I don't watch (E!, or Bravo, or something). Somehow it was all so confusing from the outside, the opposite of a show with a title like "The Real Housewives of Orange County" in which the premise is self-evident.

This is not meant to sound like that person who says "I don't own a television." It's not that there are lowbrow celebrities too low for me to be willing to know about. (Try me on Sandra Rimonato or the Novogratzes or the Candy Apples dance troupe, or plotlines from "Law & Order: SVU" or any of many of the droopy entries in "Masterpiece: Mystery.") It's just that these things have a way of working themselves into your brain completely of their own volition, and depending on one's brain or one's habits, some things burrow in deeper, quicker than others. Some things stay there and others advance yet further, turning you into an active participant. If one of the Kardashians had shown up on an HGTV show or a "Law & Order" episode had been based on them, I might have come on board earlier. But they didn't.

French Magazine HQ Gets Burned After Publishing Inflammatory ...

Editors for the French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo/ Charlie Weekly, say their headquarters were attacked by a firebomb on Wednesday, 2 November, after it had published an inflammatory image of the Prophet Mohammed on its cover.

According to Reuters, this week’s edition of the magazine shows a cartoon depicting Mohammed and a speech bubble with the words: “100 lashes if you don’t die of laughter.”

The magazine, making reference to Muslim sharia law, carried the headline “Charia Hebdo”, adding that Mohammed was the guest editor for the issue.

According to reports from the Guardian , a petrol bomb was thrown at the offices of Charlie Hebdo at about 1 a.m. and a large amount of material in the office was destroyed, police said.

The fire happened, the Guardian reported , before the “sharia” edition was to hit news stands on Wednesday morning in what the paper had mockingly called a “celebration” of the victory of the moderate Islamist party An-Nahda in the Tunisian elections and the Libyan transitional executive’s statement that Islamic sharia law would be the country’s main source of law. On the front page a cartoon prophet Muhammad says: “100 lashes if you don’t die of laughter!...

Magazine office burns as Islam issue hits stands | Portal ...

Paris (CNN) — The offices of a French satirical magazine burned early Wednesday morning, the day it was due to publish an issue with a cover appearing to make fun of Islamic law.

The cover of the magazine, Charlie Hebdo, has a bearded and turbaned cartoon figure saying “100 lashes if you’re not dying of laughter.”

The director of publication of the magazine said the fire was caused by a Molotov cocktail.

The executive, identified on CNN affiliate BFM-TV as “Charb,” expressed outrage at the attack.

“The arsonist didn’t read this magazine — no one knows what’s in this magazine except for the ones who will buy it this morning,” he said.

“People acted violently over a magazine where they don’t even know the content. This is what is most deviant and dumb,” Charb said.

Paris police confirmed that a fire started at the Charlie Hebdo building at 1 a.m. Wednesday and was extinguished about two hours later.
