Sexual harassment's slow evolution
News of old claims of sexual harassment against Herman Cain reveal how much has changed since the 1990s - and what has stayed the same.
There's nothing new about a sexual harassment suit in the hallowed halls of Washington. What's rarer is a black conservative garnering national headlines. So it's no surprise that past sexual harassment allegations against Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain has conservative pundits recalling the last time a black man with political ambitions faced such charges - the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
As Talking Points Memo notes , the rhetoric on the right regarding Mr Cain is incredibly similar to the rhetoric that was used to defend Justice Thomas - that the liberal media is trying to take down a conservative black man, that political correctness has run amok, that the women in question are either crazy or out for a payday.
An Employment Law Solicitor Will Assist You ... - The Board Magazine
Just one of the points that David Cameron assured companies was that he would help make employment law fairer to businesses. If you’d like to discover how changes in the legal requirements have an effect on or perhaps advantage you and your business then you need assistance from an employment law solicitor. An employment law solicitor will be able to let you know exactly what implications these hmodifications could have for your business. One of the observed difficulties with this judgment tends to be that some organisations will terminate short-term personnel prior to when the a dozen weeks are up to avoid paying further salary....
Crisp v Apple Retail - People Management Magazine Online
Crisp, who worked in an Apple Store, posted derogatory statements on Facebook about Apple and its products. The posts were made on a "private" Facebook page and outside of working hours. One of his colleagues, who happened to be a Facebook "friend", saw the comments, printed the posts and passed them to the store manager. Crisp was subsequently dismissed for gross misconduct. The employment tribunal rejected Crisp's claim for unfair dismissal. Key to the tribunal’s decision was the fact that Apple had a clear social media policy in place and had made it absolutely plain throughout the induction process that commentary on Apple products, or critical remarks about the brand, were strictly prohibited. Interestingly the tribunal took into account that such comments would be particularly damaging for Apple as image is so central to its success. Despite having "private" Facebook settings, the tribunal decided that there was nothing to prevent...
