UW College of Law Ranked among Nation's Best Values
October 24, 2011 — PreLaw Magazine ranks the University of Wyoming 15th for providing the best value among the nation's more than 200 law schools approved by the American Bar Association.
"The best value study is not designed to identify the schools where students can get their greatest return on investment or where they will earn the most upon graduation," the publication noted. "Instead, this study is designed for students who want a quality legal education at an affordable price. As such, we weighed bar passage and job placement figures with tuition and average indebtedness upon graduation."
UW College of Law Dean Steve Easton says the study did not include some quality criteria that would rank UW even higher on the list.
"For example, most of our students get the opportunity to participate in clinics and, therefore, practice law with real clients and real cases before graduating. At many schools, only a few students get that opportunity," Easton says. "Our students get a tremendous set of opportunities for a very reasonable tuition cost, at least when compared to other law schools, at both the resident and non-resident rates.

November 2, 2011 Fall Finals Study PlanThanksgiving approaches. Time for students to commit their study plans to writing! Here are my recommendations for students who want to prepare for exams AND enjoy their families and friends during a (partially) relaxed Thanksgiving break.
For each course, set target dates for completion of your outline (course summary), early completion of your briefing for class, and the number of practice exam questions you intend to answer. Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 24, 2011. Usually, law schools have no classes on the day before, Wednesday, November 23. Reading week and exams follow shortly after the semester resumes. For many students, time with family and friends is too important to neglect at this time of year. Plan to relax! Writing out your detailed study schedule before November (then sticking to it) will allow you to relax, because you will see the relaxation as PART of the study plan instead of interference with it.
History 301: Indiana stood tall for slaves – briefly
Indianapolis in 1829.
Bethuel Morris, who had a hand in just about every commercial and cultural enterprise in early Indianapolis, was at the time the President Judge of the Fifth Circuit Court. In these early years of statehood the Circuit Court was true to its name; the judges would travel the circuit around the counties within their purviews and rule on cases in the home courts.
As president judge, Bethuel Morris wrote the decision in the case heard in Indianapolis and recorded in court documents as “Sewall’s Slaves.” The case was an early landmark in slavery law in the United States.
The suit was brought by slave owner, William Sewall, over his female slaves, Nelly and Mary, and Nelly’s two daughters, according to Jacob Piatt Dunn’s “Greater Indianapolis.” Sewall and the women and children were traveling through Indiana from Virginia on their way to Sewall’s new home in Illinois. Delayed in Indianapolis by a big rainstorm, the women heard that they were in a free state and escaped their owner, seeking refuge with one of the city’s overseers of the poor.
