Medical marijuana to be smoked in open at event
The sanctioned use of marijuana on public property -- part of the two-day Home Grown Maine Trade Show organized by Medical Marijuana Caregivers of Maine -- is unprecedented in the state, the result of intensive negotiations among Kennebec County District Attorney's Office, the Augusta Police Department, event organizers and civic center personnel.
Accommodating legal users of the drug posed a sticky issue for civic center staff.
For instance, where could attendees who hold proper legal documentation be permitted to use marijuana for medical purposes? The state law that permits medical use of marijuana to relieve debilitating medical conditions bans people from smoking it in public places.
Organizers posed the question to Dana Colwill, civic center director.
The answer -- negotiated through law enforcement officials and transmitted to the show organizers -- is to use a vaporizer, which produces no smoke, in a controlled location.
New Jersey marijuana arrests assisted nationwide drug bust ...
Following the recent conviction of a man accused of drug trafficking and conspiring to ship more than 500 pounds of marijuana cross-country, authorities have recognized the role that key New Jersey arrests played towards the conviction. On July 5, New Jersey State Police performed a stop of a vehicle attempting to enter Route 46 in Fairfield, but found boxes in the vehicle containing around 125 pounds of marijuana. The driver was arrested.
This arrest was part of a national effort to stop the recently convicted 52-year-old man's nationwide drug ring. According to authorities, the man attempted to ship the marijuana to Fairfield, New Jersey using UPS. While one shipment of four boxes was successful, UPS officials seized a second attempted shipment around a week later. The second shipment was more than 212 pounds. The original shipment had gone to the man that was arrested by New Jersey State Police, so the drugs were never sold....
