What are the rules/law when it comes to writing a book?

I have decided to start writing a book of my experiences. My childhood & adolescent years and the challenges I endured. There are a lot of negative things I would be including in regards to my biological parents.

What is the law regarding plagery when writing a book?

I have heard that if a book is really old it does not matter if you quote from it or put the words in a character's mouth. Are copyrights under some sort of statute of limitations? I am not sure if this is the term I am looking for.


There's a difference between plagiary (more often called plagiarism) and violation of copyright. Yes, copyrights are in force for a limited time, although that time is pretty long. I think you'd better google "copyright" for that information. Plagiarism, however,

Most books on tennis tend to be focused on young players with an eye to them becoming outstanding players competing at a high level.

The difference between that individual and a 40 year old woman who has never played a sport in her life is huge. I think those books set up someone like that to fail by creating unrealistic expectations or overwhelming them with information.

I had never seen a book designed for beginners covering all aspects of the game.

My book gives them the essentials of proper technique, simple advice on equipment, leagues, clubs, strategy, advice on selecting pros, getting your kids involved and some of the things to be avoided.

While I think I covered just about everything, I did it in 140 (my readers say humorous, easy to read pages) and not some manual that no one ever reads.
