German x M in Law made a torte with a sort of cookie dough rather than cake layers & buttercream icing?

I never got to watch her making this cake, but it had to have 6 or more layers to it, the 'cake' layers were thin but I don't know what they were made with. Haven't been able to find anything like it in recipe books. Can anyone help?

After we finished our first round of drinks, we sat down at our table. The restaurant is set up with two rooms. The front room is a more square and social, while the back room is a little bit more intimate. We sat in the back room. There's also a great table next to the fake fireplace that we wanted to sit at, but that one only seats two and we had three. I had the pork chop for dinner....
