Apartment smoking ban: Evictions possible?
Few imagined the veritable landslide coming down out of Sacramento that is Senate Bill 322, which allows landlords to prohibit smoking in rental units. The law goes into effect on January 1, 2012.
Critics say the law targets smokers in rental properties for eviction, as landlords would be free to change the terms of tenancy.
The proponents say SB 332 would comply with all federal, state, and local requirements governing changes to the terms of a rental or lease agreement.
The law apparently allows the eventual eviction of smokers who continue to smoke after their lease has been changed, but only after the tenant is given a (non-specified) time frame in which to quit smoking.
The bill’s analysis by the Senate Judiciary Committee said, “a family could face eviction because one member is having a difficult time quit smoking within the requisite time period.
Amazon Goes Live with Book Rental Service
Amazon has added books to content that can be borrowed as part of an Amazon Prime membership, which already comes with movies and television program rentals as part of the $79 annual fee.
Thousands of titles across all genres are included in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, but only one can be borrowed each month. They can be read on all Kindle models and there are no due dates: books can be checked back in, or Amazon can disappear the book when the rental expires.
Amazon said almost all of the titles are included under fixed-fee agreements with publishers. In some cases, however, Amazon is purchasing the title under standard wholesale terms each time a reader borrows it. The company said this will demonstrate to these publishers that this service presents new opportunities for incremental growth and revenue.
