There has been a lot of hype surrounding Dubai Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012 edition, mainly because this year ushers in newcomer to the region, Simon P Lock, as its creative director. Much like the hype and sadly the following disappointment surrounding President Barack Obama, there was hope, but not much else.

With minimal attendance in the mornings from industry professionals and a few mediocre collections inserted throughout the four-day event, DFW presented more a promise of what’s to come, rather than the execution of what was anticipated by supporters.

Dubai Fashion Week still has a long way to go. Lock openly admits this. He knows change can’t happen over night — or in this case, in a single season. Perhaps the biggest mistake was promising too much and elevating expectations to an unrealistic level. The relevant media just should’ve known better.

While the founder and visionary behind Australian Fashion Week, what actually makes Lock most credible is this particular ability to concede that DFW won’t transform into Paris Fashion Week in just one season. Yet, unfortunately, that realism still doesn’t garner the desired international buyers, and it definitely doesn’t place the key media players in the front row — not yet, anyway.

The Role

On behalf of our client, a major European Jewelry house, we are currently looking for an experienced Female Brand Coordinator (Jewelry) to be based in Dubai.

You will be assisting the Marketing Director in coordinating with 2-3 stores at the end of the year 2012.

Your main responsibilities will be:

Looking at the brand, making sure all the standards are in place for the stores, daily sales forecasts, implementing Marketing strategies, coordinating with sales forces. It is a 1/3 Marketing, 2/3 Business Development job.

Requirements

To be apply for this role, you must have a proven experience in the Fashion/Jewelry sector in the UAE. 3-4 years of total experience, energetic, ambitious, with excellent commands in English.

Dubai International Film Festival and Gulf Film Festival Showing in ...

Over a dozen films that demonstrate the diversity of cinema in the Arab world, among them winners at the Dubai International Film Festival and Gulf Film Festival, will screen to German audiences this week at the 2011 Arab Film Festival Berlin (ALFILM), to be held from Nov. 2 to 10, 2011.

Organised by the Friends of the Arabic Cinema, Berlin e.V, ALFILM showcases 60 films from the Arab world, centred on two themes – the main platform being movies on the Arab Spring and the other, a Focus segment on humour in Arab cinema. The festival also has a Retrospective segment, this year honouring Lebanese directors Borhan Alouié and Maroun Baghdadi. Now in its third edition, ALFILM selects films that are rarely screened in European theatres.

Among the films chosen from the UAE include Abdulla Al Kaabi’s The Philosopher depicting his journey to rediscovering his Iraqi roots.
