I've seen the phrase "Eight miles high" referred to in Science Fiction stories, books, poems, rock group names, even pop lyrics (think Don Maclean's "American Pie"). Where does it originate from?
"Eight Miles High" is a Byrds song. I don't know if that's the origin though.

NFL Game Day Preview
"Some of our greatest games that we've ever played have been against them," Brady said.
Brady is 6-1 against the Steelers, with 14 touchdown passes, three interceptions and a 104.8 passer rating. Pittsburgh's blitzes and shifting schemes don't confuse the two-time league MVP, and Ben Roethlisberger tends to struggle against Bill Belichick's defense.
However, the current New England defense is vulnerable, which could lead to a shootout if Brady's mastery over the Steel Curtain continues.
"As the league evolves and you've got to keep up with teams like New England scoring 60 points a game," Roethlisberger said, "it's part of the evolution."
Miami at N.Y. Giants • Noon Sunday (KOTV-6) The Dolphins aren't in any better shape on this trip to the New Jersey Meadowlands than they were two weeks ago, when they fell to the Jets. In fact, they probably are worse off following that late collapse against Denver.

Eight miles high, and when you touch down You'll find that it's stranger than known Signs in the street that say where you're going Are somewhere, just being their own Nowhere is there warmth to be found Among those afraid of losing their ground Rain gray town, known for its sound In places, small faces unbound Round the squares, huddled in storms Some laughing, some just shapeless forms Sidewalk scenes and black limousines Some living, some standing aloneThis piece is based on the lyrics to the song Eight Miles High by The Byrds. This song is kind of the quintessential Sixties sound for me. Kind of sinister, kind of trippy, kind of happy.
I probably should have done a piece with the lyrics “Hello it’s been awhile…”
I’ve been pretty busy lately, and have been working on this one for awhile....
Dr Hermes MORE RETRO-SCANS - Eight miles high and freezing
Hey there! Dr Hermes here. I've been putting up scans from old comics, pulps, men's magazines, paperbacks, ads and stills from obscure movies, pictures of babes of yore, all with my usual skewed commentary. Lately we've been getting into more esoteric topics, really whatever seems interesting. Feel free to leave a comment or email me at
