Team Puts "Past" in National Pastime

When the Atlantic Base Ball Club gets together for games at the Smithtown Historical Society ’s Brush Barn, it’s not the authentic nineteenth century clothing they wear that brings them there.

“It’s like pure baseball. You’d have to play it to understand,” said Ed “Pigtail” Elmore, the team’s captain.

Authenticity is the name of the game with vintage baseball, and the Atlantics don’t overlook any details. Each team member uses a nickname belonging to a real player from more than a hundred years ago – Elmore bears the moniker of William “Pigtail Billy” Riley – and they play by the rules of the game exactly as they were back then.

Most are clustered in New England and the Midwest, and they travel frequently to play each other. They represent teams from different eras in the national pastime’s formative years, between the 1850’s and 1880’s.

Their wives and daughters, on the other hand, adorned themselves in bright colors and often uncomfortable and impractical laces and petticoats, to signal the status of their family. The consumer pastime of shopping was born, as women spent their spare hours keeping up their middle-class appearance, or creating one by judicious purchases....
