The Yoga Revival

Geoff Wood: Hello I'm Geoff Wood and this is Encounter on ABC Radio National.

It's Friday night in downtown Sydney, Surry Hills, and the hotels and clubs all along this street are busy.

But the biggest crowds are right here where several hundred people have packed in for a night of chanting and devotion. It's not a night club, it's a yoga studio, and this is one the stars of yoga - the American kirtan leader, Dave Stringer

Kirtan chanting

Dave Stringer: Kirtan means literally 'to sing' in Sanskrit. What makes it different from other music is the fact that the crowd is participating in it. In the tradition that I learned it in we'll start slowly and then over time and a series of repetitions, begin to speed up until there's a wave of ecstasy, people are clapping their hands and dancing and then the wave breaks and leaves people in a place of silence.

Archaeologists doing a heritage impact assessment on the site of a future gold mine northwest of Carmacks, Yukon, have unearthed a Chinese coin from the 17th century . Although old Chinese coins are fairly common finds along the northwest coast of Canada and the United States, this is only the third one ever found in the interior Yukon. According to James Mooney, cultural resource specialist with Ecofor Consulting Limited, the archaeological firm hired by Western Copper and Gold Corporation to do the heritage impact assessment, all three of the Yukon Chinese coins were found in an archaeological setting. No later historical materials were found along with them, indicating that the coins were traded into the interior before the Klondike Gold Rush via the First Nations coastal trade with Europeans rather than by Europeans traipsing into the interior themselves....

Styles that were in vogue decades ago are this season’s must-haves. That super skirt is the same style as one your grandmother loved to be seen around town in when she was young. These days’ celebrities, movie and sports stars influence fashion with many of their designs regularly copied and adjusted to make them accessible for high street boutiques and fashion houses.

Fashions have been an expression of wealth and style for hundreds of years. Back in the 18th century a man’s clothing provided a clue as to how successful he was; his outfits reflected his level of birth and achievement. The royal courts of Europe, the aristocracy and the rich shaped styles. At one time fur was considered too good for common people to wear, and a law was passed forbidding women from trimming their hoods with anything other than lambs' wool and rabbit fur.

After the French Revolution, the trend for extremely complicated women’s fashions with panniers, layers of petticoats and heavy overdresses in ornate fabrics gave way to much more simplified clothing. High-waisted white muslin dresses were the order of the day together with lace and frills, ringlets and bonnets.
