Help native Americans
Diane Sawyer featured a story about Native American children overcoming poverty. Her story followed families at Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota for 11/2 years. I hope many Americans watched this program and will respond to the needs on many reservations. The United Church of Christ's Penn Central Conference Association with the Dakota Conference have been sponsoring churches that make trips to the Sioux and Lakota reservations for many years. The needs are still great.
Because I have traveled there with various church mission groups, I understand the great "poverty" that still exists on "back road" reservations. For instance Cherry Creek, South Dakota is about 20 miles away from any large grocery stores, clothing and miscellaneous stores, gas stations, etc. You travel some rough roadways to get there. Our federal government many years ago forced the Native American Indians off of their great large land possessions to smaller territories.

I believe Patagonia Clothing’s Common Threads Initiative is exactly that.
If you follow green business news , you’ll recall Common Threads recently making headlines. In the words of founder Yvon Chouinard, "This program first asks customers to not buy something if they don't need it. If they do need it, we ask that they buy what will last a long time – and to repair what breaks, reuse or resell whatever they don't wear any more. And, finally, recycle whatever's truly worn out."
The twist?
Patagonia is playing an active part in keeping used clothing in circulation. Send them your worn togs, and they’ll refurbish and help resell them. Or, if the clothing is beyond repair, they’ll recycle as much of it as humanly possible....
