Democracy is unlikely to develop or to endure unless military and other security forces are controlled by democratic institutions and necessary safeguards, checks and balances are in place. Japanese-American veterans to receive Congressional Gold Medal

It's a defining week in the existence of Torrance-based nonprofit Go For Broke, dedicated to telling the story of segregated Japanese-American military units that fought in World War II.

On Wednesday, the three units will collectively receive the Congressional Gold Medal in Washington.

They were among the most highly decorated and sustained some of the heaviest losses of any in the American military during the war. And they did so while friends and relatives were sent off to internment camps, regarded as potential national security threats even though many were American citizens.

The medal is the nation's highest civilian honor; it has been awarded only 142 times since it was initiated in 1776.

"It's an ending and it is a validation," said longtime volunteer Robi Shibao-Martin, who grew up in Gardena and who had two uncles who fought with the segregated units in Europe. "This is like the final chapter for these Japanese-Americans.
