Scrupulously researched book by noted authority traces the development of European clothing styles from prehistory to the Norman Conquest in 1066 AD. Over 160 illustrations, including 17 full-color plates, display draped robes of classical Greece, the jewel-encrusted apparel of a 10th-century Byzantine emperor, garments of peasants, as well as footwear, hairstyles, headdresses, and jewelry. Accompanying text chronologically traces origin and development of a garment and its relation to forerunners and successors. Immensely valuable reference for students, historians, artists and anyone intersted in costume history.

From martyrs to Tootsie Rolls

As always happens at the end of October, the humidity falls with the leaves. The crisp night air signifies change and the mysterious glow of a golden harvest moon casts a different light on the world, especially if that shadow is cast upon a black cat crossing our path. The long, productive days of spring and summer have vanished and chills begin to rattle our spines.

Seasonal changes are a part of life on this planet, but how people have celebrated these changes continues to be a source of change itself. Over the centuries, and across continents, festivals this time of year have come to overlap religious practices with secular and commercial ones.

Common events associated with Halloween today, like pumpkin carving and bobbing for apples, are easily associated with the concepts of ancient harvest festivals where people called on spirits or nature to bless them with bountiful crops from the fields.

According to Collier’s Encyclopedia, “primitive pagan rites have been perpetuated in and combined with the traditional celebrations of such Christian holy days as Allhallows Eve, Easter and Christmas.” Realizing that Allhallows Eve, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day fall respectively on Oct.31, Nov. 1 and Nov. 2, sheds an eerie light on how these traditions have sauntered through time.

Art News | Fantastical Costumes is What Christian Lacroix Did Next ...

PARIS — Puffs of tutus, twinkling tiaras, Cossack costumes and body suits painted with watery greenery fill a series of studios backstage at the Opéra Garnier in Paris. “This is my couture,” says Christian Lacroix, before his latest creations took to the stage in “La Source,” a magical realist ballet created in the 19th century and rarely seen since then. These fantastical costumes, mixing folkloric outfits with diaphanous pastel dresses, scattered with sparkling crystal, are for just one among a series of theatrical events across Europe that Mr. Lacroix has worked on since his couture house was shuttered in 2009. The list of his collaborations, for productions from Berlin to Paris, bring the beat of his work schedule back to the pulse of the annual rounds of fashion shows. The costumes for “La Source” (at the...

From martyrs to Tootsie Rolls

Richmond County Daily Journal - Dec 31, 1969

From martyrs to Tootsie Rolls This practice called for children to dress in masquerade, carrying lanterns made from turnips, asking their neighbors for rewards of cake, fruit or money. Halloween remains a popular holiday in many parts of Europe, the United States, Canada and Mexico
